Car Care Kits

Our kids wave and smile at people in intersections with signs asking for help. Why? In their words “so they wouldn’t feel ignored.”

Our family prays for people without homes and the home-insecure. We talk about some of the factors that cause these situations, including social injustices, personal choices, political policies, war, and family systems.

Yet seeing people in daily life also led them to want to do more – to do something practical.

Knowing we cannot solve home-insecurity on our own, and we know we can’t fix/solve everyone’s (or anyone’s) situation, we talked about what care and hospitality could look like in every day circumstances – especially in COVID time.

We decided to make some car-care-kits. We can make a bunch and then keep one or two in the car each trip we take to be prepared to offer to someone. Each kit costs around $2 to make.

Our current kits come with: ⁃ a heavy duty (freezer) gallon sealable bag ⁃ a note with something kind written or drawn ⁃ two bottles of water ⁃ a granola bar ⁃ a packet of tissues ⁃ a travel toothbrush and travel toothpaste Other items we think we can add in the future: ⁃ individual wet wipes / wet napkins (like you get at restaurants after eating chicken wings) ⁃ hard candies (like peppermints or lifesavers) ⁃ packet of powdered drink mix ⁃ basically, anything that is non-perishable and will not melt

- $1 dollar bills
