Holy Winks

I find myself walking with some anxiety as we wait for our visas. I know I would tell someone else in a similar situation - breathe; hope; trust God in this process. Yet I struggle to do those same things the past month-and-a-half.

And hope blossoms as I tell others about the process - about the doors that have opened to get us this far in the process - for in the telling I re-member the many acts of God’s faithfulness for provision.

A few weeks ago - in a particularly anxious moment - I stopped to breathe and gained a new perspective. On this particular day, amidst the minutia of emails and phone calls, a series of little things happened to give hope. I told a friend at the close of the day that it felt like a Holy Wink - as if in these moments of other people’s kindness and completion of tasks - God was winking at us, saying “It’s all good; I’ve got you; rest, trust.”

And since that day of recognizing of Holy Winks, I have seen more and more Holy Winks throughout the days. At moments when I start to feel overwhelmed by all the things in front of us - especially all those things over which I have no control - that little things happen and feel like “Holy Winks” - God’s little reminders that we don’t need to worry; we can trust; we can hope; we can join with the refrain of Psalm 136 “For God’s steadfast love endures forever.”
